In many parts of the world, there are August holidays that change their observance date from year to year. These holidays are sometimes called “moveable feasts” because they do not fall on a fixed date, but instead move around the calendar. This is because they are tied to the observance of other holidays or astronomical events.
Two of the most common August moveable feasts are:
- Summer Bank Holiday (England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland): This holiday is often observed on the first Monday of August, but it can also be observed on the last Monday of August. The date of the Summer Bank Holiday is determined by the British government and is intended to provide workers with a long weekend in the summer.
- Civic Holiday (Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta): This holiday is observed on the first Monday of August in most parts of Canada, but it can also be observed on a different date depending on the province. The Civic Holiday is a provincial holiday that is intended to provide workers with a long weekend in the summer.
In addition to these two holidays, there are a number of other August moveable feasts that are observed in different parts of the world. These include:
- Mid-Autumn Festival: This Chinese holiday is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for families and friends to come together to eat mooncakes, a traditional delicacy, and admire the full moon. The date of the Mid-Autumn Festival changes from year to year, as the lunar calendar is a lunar calendar.
- Tisha B’av: This Jewish holiday is a day of fasting and mourning to commemorate the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. Tisha B’av is observed on the 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av. The date of Tisha B’av changes from year to year, as the Hebrew calendar is a lunisolar calendar, which means that it is based on both the lunar and solar cycles.
Moveable feasts are a fascinating part of many cultures and traditions. They provide a way for people to celebrate important events and holidays throughout the year, even though the dates of these events change.
